(CHATHAM, MA)—When Dave and Catherine Ferraresi opened Gustare Oils & Vinegars in Chatham in 2009, their ultimate goal was to create a memorable European village shopping experience by offering high-quality products, inviting service and a tasting bar—a place where guests could sample any of the premium balsamic vinegars or olive oils on display.

Although the idea of selling specialty products like Cape Cod Cranberry Pear White Balsamic Vinegar and Tuscan Herb Extra Virgin Olive Oil sounded unique and appealing, “people thought we were crazy at the time,” said Catherine Ferraresi, adding that educating guests was a key component to their success. Over the past decade, the couple have built a reputable business that sells fresh, quality products imported from around the world—and have gained a loyal following along the way.

To celebrate their 10-year milestone, Gustare is offering a promotional 10 percent discount on select items in their store and online during June. On June 30, Gustare will host a guest appreciation celebration in front of the store on Main Street featuring free slices (1-4 p.m.) from Pizza Barbone’s portable wood-fired oven. Gustare’s most popular Fig Balsamic Vinegar and versatile Basil Extra Virgin Olive Oil will be available for guests to drizzle over their pizza. Inside the shop, guests can sample sweet, tasty bites made from Catherine’s favorite recipes (Gustare has a test kitchen where recipes are developed and refined.) Guests will also receive a postcard featuring a painting of the Gustare store by local artist Tilda McGee Bystrom at checkout.

At Gustare—which means to taste, to enjoy, to savor in Italian—every bottle is hand-labeled, filled, corked and sealed in their shop daily. Their personal touch and high-quality products set them apart from neighborhood supermarkets. In addition, guests can meander and sample flavored oils and vinegars and talk to the team—especially the owners—about the products to gain a better understanding of how to use their selections.

After opening their location in downtown Chatham 10 years ago, they have since moved to a bigger space more centrally located on Main Street. The owners of Gustare prove that if you are passionate about your business, create a unique guest experience and balance the seasonality of the Cape with a strong online business, you will reap the rewards. “The harder you work, the luckier you will be,” says Dave.

For the last two weeks in June, Gustare Oils & Vinegars is sponsoring a special 10-year anniversary guest appreciation advertisement on display at the Chatham Orpheum Theater featuring Tilda McGee Bystrom’s artwork. Gustare is located at 461 Main St., Chatham, 508-945-4505.
